Year One

Year 1 is the start of amazing journey through Key Stage 1, where children learn lots of new things!

During autumn term, children travel back in time to the seaside, where they partake in the famous Punch and Judy show and make comparisons to how the seaside was previously to how we know it now.

Year 1 children then get their party outfits on and look at an exciting topic ‘Let’s party!’ where children develop their understanding of different cultural festivals such as Diwali and Christmas.

In spring, our topic will be ‘Lost toys’. We will be exploring a variety of Victorian toys and toys which our children play with now. How many children can understand what children played with before an Xbox or a PlayStation?

After taking a trip back in time, children will blast in to the future during our topic ‘The Aliens are coming!’ Children will be inventors during this term and will create their own invention, whilst developing and plotting their own stories.

Finally, in the summer term our topics will be ‘Metamorphosis' and 'Rumble in the Jungle’. During this topic children will crawl with minibeasts and they will have the opportunity to observe them closely. Children will also identify the geographical similarities and differences about the world around them.

In Key Stage one all children will get a chance to use all of their senses to explore including crafts, learning about different cultures, role play, food tasting and cooking.

During the summer term in Year One, the children will have their phonics screening check in order to assess their reading. You will be receiving a lot more information regarding the check nearer the time, including a parent meeting.
